Ashkenazi Tefillin
These Tefillin are crafted according to halachic rulings passed down through generations in the communities of Lithuania, Poland, Galicia, Germany, and Eastern Europe.
They are written in the Beit Yosef script – a clear, precise, and sharp script widely used in Ashkenazi communities, including both Lithuanian and many Chassidic traditions.
What Characterizes Ashkenazi Tefillin?
While the basic structure of Tefillin is similar across Jewish traditions, key differences lie in the script style and halachic rulings on how the Parshiyot are written. Ashkenazi Tefillin are typically written according to the opinion of the Rosh, in which all four sections are written in an “open” format.
The wrapping custom also differs: Ashkenazim wrap the strap around the arm from the outside inwards, toward the body, and usually make seven wraps.
The Ashkenazi Knot
The head knot is shaped like the Hebrew letter Daled, and the arm knot like a Yud, in accordance with Ashkenazi halachic rulings.
You can order Tefillin with pre-tied Ashkenazi knots, so they arrive fully ready for use according to halacha.
