What Makes “Shimusha Rabbah” Tefillin Unique?
Script: These tefillin are written in a distinct style called “Ktav Shimusha Rabbah”, which differs from the classic Sephardic “Beit Yosef” and the Arizal script.
Examples: The shapes of the letters Yud, Ayin, Shin and others are crafted with precision, following Chassidic tradition.

Order of the Scrolls (Parshiot) – In Tefillin Shel Rosh, there are 3 main traditions:
- Rashi: The standard halachic order.
- Rabbeinu Tam: An alternate order (see Rabbeinu Tam Tefillin).
- Shimusha Rabbah: Some authorities use a unique order, though most Shimusha Rabbah tefillin follow the Rashi order — with stringency mainly in the script and halachic precision.
Enhanced Tefillin Construction:
- Exacting square shape and alignment.
- Special stitching and threads according to Chassidic customs.
- Tall, highly squared batim (houses), made of thick quality leather (from strong sinews).
Who Uses Shimusha Rabbah Tefillin?
- Primarily Chassidim – including Chabad, Breslov, Gur, Satmar and others.
- Some Lithuanian Jews who seek extra halachic stringency also use them.
- Occasionally Torah scholars or baalei teshuva who prefer Chassidic-style hiddur (beautification) in mitzvot.
